Ayöök Portal comes on line with advanced technology

The Ayöök Portal representing Totontepecano or Alta Mixe, a language spoken in the Mountains of Oaxaca, Mexico, is an advanced version of the Passamaquoddy-Maliseet Language Portal, linking advanced technologies for linguists, such as Elan annotation software for analysis and subtitling.

The portal now has 40 videos of Natural Group Conversation[BL1] , produced by a community video team trained by Speaking Place in Community Self- Documentation[BL2] , as well as a growing dictionary. The software also incorporates a number of efficiencies which, in combination with self- documentation, supports a more self-sustaining community education resource that has already addressed environmental threats and the need for language revival.

The Ayöök Portal was build by Speaking Place for Totontepec which had asked us for a “community encyclopedia to preserve how to do things correctly” in collaboration with Linguist, Daniel Suslak, and the Anthropology Department at the University of Indiana, Bloomington and the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Science Foundation.
